So Stipulated

Over at TPM, Josh tries to work the refs a little:

Andrew Sullivan makes a good point. For the 'celebrity' in the campaign, how many sitcoms has Barack Obama done guest spots on? How many movies has he done cameos in? How many times has he hosted Saturday Night Live. As John McCain's IMDB bio shows, he's done a lot. 24, Wedding Crashers, The Tony Danza show, numerous appearances on Saturday Night Live. It's another example of the curve that John McCain gets graded on.

Well, yeah.

But it's not just McCain, and it's not just the press corps. Nearly all Republicans not only get graded on a curve, but they know it. In 2004, they knew they could defend a service-ducking incumbent president by smearing the Democratic war hero opponent.

The fact that the traditional media + McCain = truelove4evah only exacerbates the underlying issue.

But we need to get beyond acting surprised. Everyone. Obama included.

Earlier today, Obama started to get satisfyingly aggressive:

"Now two points, one, they know they're lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant."

"These guys" = Republicans.

"It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant" could continue 'because apparently they seem incapable of running the country.'

With the traditional media in tow, McCain and the Republican party will keep calling the sky green and smearing Democrats as colorblind. It's a fine-tuned tactic we've seen since Nixon. But pointing it out isn't enough - we've got to give people a sense of what's behind why McCain is attacking Obama so falsely and superficially in order for an actual impression of McCain to sink in.

Until then, expect to see the absurdity increase. I'm waiting for McCain to attack Obama's book deals from one of Cindy's estates.

Re: So Stipulated (none / 0)

Remember the lesson of 2004: we must hit back against EVERY argument.  If the Republicans claim Obama is the biggest celebrity in the world, we must respond by compiling statistical evidence that, in fact, he is not!  That is the only way to win an election.

Are you serious or joking in the second half of your comment - I assume joking. Can't just play defense, right?

Re: So Stipulated (none / 0)

I am joking.

I mean, if I were to make a list of 100 recommended strategies for responding to McCain's stupid commercial, I'm not sure "prove that McCain is a bigger celebrity" would make the list.

We have a lot of distributed thinking power on the blogs.  But what we really need is smarter responses, not more plentiful ones.

Re: So Stipulated (none / 0)

It'll be a horserace because they (the MSM) wants a horserace. They will prop up McCain until the bitter end knowing that most people will not pay close enough attention to notice. So unless we arrange a coup of the third estate, we're driving in neutral uphill so to speak. Doesn't help that most nightly commentators now have the intellectual thought process of a well preened chia pet.

But it won't reduce oil consumption 3-4%. (1.00 / 2)

It might add to mileage but better tire wear will never reduce OIL CONSUMPTION to ANYWHERE near that degree.

Re: Oh yes it will (none / 0)

Shazone... Sorry - I must give you an F

Our friends at Politifact have also looked into Sen. Barack Obama's claim about tire inflation and found it to be true -- not merely that car tune-ups and proper tire inflation will save millions of barrels of oil per year, but that it will save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.

No one knows for sure, of course, which may be one of the reasons why our experts disagreed with Obama's claim that this conservation method would save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.

But the salient point is that such measures are serious. Why the Republicans are mocking them at a time of energy crisis seems bizarre.

We're also reminded of this news from 1990:

"The Washington Times, September 14, 1990...The Bush administration yesterday launched an advertising blitz telling Americans they could fight oil shortages and high gas prices by conserving, while advising Congress there is no sign of price gouging by the oil industry and that gas prices are 'not unreasonable.' The slogan for the yearlong campaign, 'Do Your Part, Drive Smart,' tells consumers they can save more than 7 million gallons of gasoline a day if they keep their tires properly inflated, drive slower and join car pools.

Said Energy Secretary James D. Watkins: "The president has called upon Americans to do their part 'to conserve. Our intention is to give people simple steps they can take immediately and have direct impact on fuel savings."

Sorry..when I read "no one knows"... (1.00 / 2)

for sure", that means "no one knows for sure".  Including any statements from Politico.

No one knows for sure, of course, which may be one of the reasons why our experts disagreed with Obama's claim that this conservation method would save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.

And the 1990 stats that were cited include driving slower and car pooling...not just using the trusty old tire gauge.

Nobody KNOWS. But I'd be willing to put cash money that the actual experts that Politifact asked know a damn sight more than you.

No, not particularly. I'm just a cat playing with a mouse because he isn't up to eating it.

Dead right. (none / 0)

It might reduce your gasoline consumption by a few percent, but your oil consumption won't be affected. Well spotted, Shaz.

Really liked Obama's response (none / 0)

Blunt and a little condescending without going overboard, while reminding voters how incompetent the GOP has been.

The news media is quickly discovering voters aren't falling for the same bs stories propping up the GOP.
