Obama taking week off

I was wondering if Obama would choose his VP prior to taking off for vacation, but he's not, and instead going pretty much off the radar for a week, it sounds like:

Asked about Obama fatigue and why he's ceding a week of press coverage to McCain Obama said:

"I'm going to see my grandma who I haven't seen in almost 18-19 months and who's getting to the age where I want to make sure I'm spending time with her on a consistent basis so that she can see her great grand children and I want to spend time with those children as well."

"We had a very long primary, we had the longest primary in history so I can imagine that folks need a break from politics," Obama said. "The majority of people have been fed a constant stream of political chatter and I'm sure that a couple of weeks off to enjoy the Olympics is exactly what the doctor ordered."

Maybe the Obama campaign is taking the "Obama fatigue" poll findings under advice. You wonder though, if McCain or his allies take the lull as an opportunity to hit Obama again. Groups like the NRA ($40M) and the chamber of Commerce ($100M) are going to start swinging pretty soon, as is the RNC.
President Bush and John F. Kerry sparred throughout the Olympics.

The Democrats had just wrapped up their nominating convention, and Kerry embarked on a cross-country tour. By the middle of the Athens games, Kerry was calling on Bush to denounce ads that Swift Boat Veterans for Truth had begun airing two weeks earlier, which raised questions about his military service.

Bush, in preparation for a GOP convention that followed the Olympics, launched $30 million in TV advertising, including a spot that irked the United States Olympic Committee because it used Olympic imagery to tout his decisions on the war on terror.

Or, maybe Obama or the DNC has some hard-hitting ads aimed at McCain during the next week, while he's not around.

Meanwhile McCain is investing more time in Pennsylvania:

John McCain is scheduled to return to Pennsylvania Monday for a two-day swing through the western and central part of the state, this time with former Gov. Tom Ridge at his side.

The trip had originally been planned as a western Pennsylvania bus tour, as Pennsylvania Avenue told you about a few weeks back. But plans changed after word of the tour leaked.

Next week's trip will begin in Erie as originally planned -- with Ridge at McCain's side -- and then head to Harrisburg. Details are still sketchy, but the tour is tentatively scheduled to then head to York and Lancaster on Tuesday.

When Obama gets back from his week-long vacation, he's going to church with McCain:

Halfway through the games, McCain and Obama will make their first joint campaign appearance Aug. 16 at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., where they are expected to appear briefly together before taking questions individually from the Rev. Rick Warren for an hour each.

While the Olympics are on, to break through (2.00 / 1)

the cacaphony, McCain and his cohorts will have to spend gazillions. It is not a bad idea that Obama decided to take his vacation during this time. I doubt most Americans would be tuned in to listen right now to rightwing generated nonsense about the General election..

Re: Obama taking week off (2.00 / 2)

I wish he'd vacation in, say, Alaska.  Anyway, they will have ads up during the Olympics, and hopefully they'll unveil a few more.  I hope and assume that his strategists have weighed all of these issues and signed off on it.

You don't really want to go to Alaska in August, it's the rainy/indictment season.  June is the perfect month for an Alaska vacation.

Just becuase Obama is going on vacation doesn't mean his campaign is shut down.  There will probably still be rapid response and statements released.  He just won't be campaigning for a little while (which is fine.  If McCain can take weekends off then surely our guy can have a week off)

VP Choice would have been nice (none / 0)

I think that it might not have been a bad idea to have announced the VP pick on Wednesday, campaign with him/her on Wed. & Thurs, and let the VP pick take the next week or so to campaign, maybe do a couple of fundraisers, and be the campaign's face for next week while Obama vacations.

Then when he returns the two of them can do a couple of visits before the DNC.

I hope this won't go down historically as a huge mistake.
